A Message from Former Stollery Patient, Jillian Pineau
I was a typical energetic kid, until one day I felt completely exhausted. When doctors sent me for blood work, the results showed my platelets were dangerously low. I was rushed to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
Hours later, a bone marrow aspirate confirmed that I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. My world stopped.
The oncology team at the Stollery met with me and my family and discussed the details of my seven-phase, two and a half year treatment plan, which included both chemotherapy and radiation.
My first year of treatment was an aggressive attack on the cancer cells. It took a toll on me physically and emotionally. I lost 20 pounds and needed feeding tubes for nutrition.
Thankfully, the worst of my battle with cancer is over. I am now in remission and graduating high school with my friends. Because of the Stollery Children’s Hospital, and supporters like you, I have survived cancer and am able to dream about my future.
